5/29/2012 0 Comments Step Right UpAfter a busy Winter in the studio, I am pleased to announce the openings of a few groups shows that my work will be in this Spring. The first of which opens June 4th and runs through September 22nd. This show is entitled Images and is at the Walter E. Terhune Gallery Owens Community College, Perrysburg, OH. It is running in conjunction with the GAS conference, so if you find yourself in Toledo, check out the events they will be holding! And opening June 5th running through August 31st: G8: A Group Exhibition Celebrating Eight Contemporary Artists Working in Studio Glass / Winston Wachter / Seattle, WA. I am especially excited to announce this show because I will be presenting for the first time, blown engraved glass!

Today reminded me of the 17th of March. Except on that day, the president didn't support marriage equality and today he does. It's not all bad, hey?
5/8/2012 1 Comment Chronology is OverratedHaven't been so good about updating the old blog. But as I have learned from comrade Boxer, 'I will work harder'. All the way back in February, Zak and I had the opportunity to visit our friends and fellow artists Martin Janecky, Lenka Dusilova and Judith Warwick, in Fairbanks, Alaska. The landscape there is so enormous that even as you are looking at it, it somehow seems unreal. The ravens were equally as big as the landscape and the Chickadees were the fluffiest I had ever seen! The sun was low and the shadows were long. Does it make me a bad mother that I let my son Rosco, who is only a small beaver, have more than a sip of my Martini?
3/21/2012 12 Comments Museum of Glass Residency!Last year I was awarded the 'Artist's Choice Award' at the Museum of Glass, Red Hot Auction. So this year, I get a 5-day residency at the museum! This means that I will be working with the amazing team at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA. March 28 - April 1st. (Next week!) We'll be working together to make me some blanks to engrave on (later at my own studio). I have prepared some Bullseye panels that we will 'roll-up' plus much more! So why not come on down! and check out the museum and watch an engraver in the hot-shop! It'll be funny! On Sunday afternoon I will be giving a lecture, check out the details on their website. And if you can't make it this week, you should check out the museum another time! Help support a great museum and resource for artists from all around the world working in all sorts of media. Video from my residency at the museum last year.
3/14/2012 0 Comments Drawing is Preferable to ComputingI have decided to give myself some slack and not worry too much about posting every single drawing I make for the Calendar Project. While of course that would be ideal, who has time to make a drawing everyday and post it on a blog?! People who have too much time on their hands, that's who. And baby, it ain't me. But I do want to share - life happens in a drawing! 3/2/2012 0 Comments Three Decades OnI hear beautiful birds.
Very quietly between the clicks of the kiln. The chugging of the train. Through the rumble of traffic and pounding of drivers. We will all push on. 2/27/2012 0 Comments Not 'What' but 'How'If you are familiar with either me or my work, you know that this guy here - Mr. Jiri Harcuba - has been the single most influence on my artistic path. He has taught me not only about the art of engraving but also about the art of expression and the art living. In an ongoing discussion about art and the artists search for a meaningful subject, Jiri recently told me that it is not 'What' but rather 'How' (attributing this bit of advice to Goethe) that is the important concern . Jiri says, "People and the world around are always the same. ‘How’ we see it makes the difference. Of course, also ‘how’ we feel about it! You are saying through your eyes and your heart something new. We see the world new and different and beautiful in your way! That is your timeless contribution." Thinking about Jiri's advice for me, I was reminded of my first two portrait engravings that I made in his class at Pilchuck Glass School, in 2003, when we first met. To this day, Jiri maintains that these are my best engravings to date - Because I was a beginner and free and because I made my 'own way' with the wheels - it is 'How' and not 'What.
2/20/2012 0 Comments Drawings and ExcusesWelcome to my new website and blog! I will try to update my blog regularly sharing my drawings and sketches for the Calendar Project. Blogging isn't exactly my forte - so lets see how it goes. While I was hoping that I would be able to sit down and draw something wonderful everyday, I have come to realize (as I suspected) that most days I am doing quick sketches. Regardless of how involved each sketch or drawing is, I am forced to sit down and think about the day - even when I don't want to. Challenging but fun. There are some days missing in this first upload, but I figured it would be better to post what I have photographed and ready now. The holes will be filled later.
